Rare for me to post on a Saturday but I'm so darn proud of the grape arbor.
Yesterday I worked for hours on the arbor, then cranked the old push mower and mowed grass for two hours.
I stood some tools against the porch wire, rooted a few cutting that had been in a bucket of water and placed them along side the tools, emptied the compost pot and chicken scrap pan, washed them out and left them to dry in the sun.
Then, walking away, I thought to myself, that's looks kinda neat...
About that grape arbor...
Poppy said from the very beginning, "this is your big idea. I am staying out of it". But guess what, he sawed the tops off the cedar trees for me this morning. It would have taken me a week to get the job done...standing on the ladder and using a hand saw.
I had cut most all the limbs off the three cedar trees using one of those expandable tree limb cutters with a saw on one end.
Poppy also helped me get the wire tightened from post to post. That was hard to do!
I've brought several bucket loads of rich soil from the goat lot, chicken lot, and compost bin. Doesn't look like much here, but the holes are deep. I plan to fill in the entire area with rich soil and mulch.
Time flies, doesn't it! Here it is bedtime, but I want to show you a nice surprise that came in the mail...
Apron patterns. These came from a really sweet blogging friend, Pam, at the red brick house on the right...or... pmrader.blogspot.com Pam sews too, and makes beautiful aprons. She has a neat blog too.
and look at this one...
I LOVE apron patterns! Thank you so much Pam! Shelby and I are doing a craft event here in Louisburg on October 5th. Would love to get one or two of these new ones made.
Could go on and on, but better say goodnight. Next thing I know, Poppy will be ready for bed.
Thank you friends.
Love,
Henny
Note to Angela...Thank you for the tip on clipping a dryer sheet to the Rose of Sharon bushes. After finishing the grape arbor, I clipped three dryer sheets to the wire to keep deer from running into the new wire. Thank you!

I'm impressed with the work you've done on the grape arbor. I think it will be perfect. The first picture of the tools looks like a country style still life photo. :-)
ReplyDeleteI adore aprons and love to wear them. I haven't made my own before but that's a great idea. Thanks for sharing with us.
Blessings,
Betsy
You are so very welcome, Melba. I am thrilled you like the patterns and can't wait to see the aprons you make with them! I also can't wait to see the grape arbor with lots of grapes on it! Geez, I wish I could catch some of your energy and drive! My yard is horrible!
ReplyDeleteGrace & Peace,
Pam
You have accomplished so much on the grape arbor project. The grapes will everything there they need and should do well. Muscadines are beginning to get ripe along the trail I walk. They still aren't quite as sweet as I like, but it won't be long. I love the Edwardian Apron Pattern! Wow! Lucky you!
ReplyDeleteEverything is looking so wonderful in your garden dear Henny Penny - you work very hard! Its the first day of spring here today & a most glorious day with even a blue sky thrown in for good luck. Have a super week my friend xx
ReplyDeleteYou have gotten so much done! I can't wait to see the finished product after it has time to get going. I swear, you can do anything you set your mind to! Love those apron patterns. I can't believe you would actually include spending a week on a ladder with a hand-saw and the tops of those trees as part of your grape arbour chores... and you're so nonchalant about it, too! I'm wondering if the cedars will leaf at some point, again, because they still have roots in the soil? Everything looks good and the pots hanging on the wire, especially. Blessings!
ReplyDeleteGrape arbor area is looking great and how sweet of Poppy to give you a hand, even it was 'your big idea'. ;-)
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice gift of those apron patterns. Happy sewing ~ FlowerLady
Hanny, Who needs a gym when you can work the land. Wow you did a great job. Wish I had some of your energy. Take care. Blessings, xoxo, Susie
ReplyDeleteHi Henny- The Grape Arbor will be nice once things start to grow -it is a good idea. First Day of SPRING here - very warm and sunny day at 20+ DegC...had some rain last week though not enough to improve our Sydney dams. Best Wsihes. KEV.
ReplyDeleteYou find some things around you to make use of. Using the goat and chicken manure is a good idea.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lot of work! It looks great. I hope you don't get too much wind and rain from the hurricane. We've had over 8 inches of rain in the last week. Have fun with your new apron patterns. The Edwardian aprons sure give good protection to those dresses, and would be a lot easier to iron than the dresses! They're long enough to protect your lap if you sat down to work, like shelling peas or peeling apples or peaches for pies. I remember my grandma and aunts sitting down with a dishpan in their laps to work on some kind of food.
ReplyDeleteOh apron patterns! How lovely, what a nice gift!! :) I think the arbour looks fantastic, and yes, that first photo is very nice! Very artistic!! :)
ReplyDeleteHow long will it take for the grapes to grow?
ReplyDeleteIt looks nice and just think how beautiful it will be when the grapes grow! I love the apron patterns too.
ReplyDeleteI love apron patterns, too. But it has been a while since I have made one. I think I like to make them cause mainly they just fit...no adjustments needed. LOL

Wow! What a load of work you got done. I'm impressed. I only moved a peony, dug out about 7 plants, replanted two of them then smoothed the area around them and mulched and then watered for about a hour and a half and I am all wacked out but you would have just gotten started at that point. You're amazing!
ReplyDeleteThe arbor looks like it's a go. So glad Poppy helped with the harder parts. He's a real softy at heart I can tell.
Sounds like the grape arbor is well set up with good soil to work with and plenty of sunshine.
Hope this hurricane barreling toward you just brings rain for you.
Vic
Well the arbor is really coming along! The patterns were a generous gift. Terry and I used to work like that.
ReplyDeletexx, Carol
Great job on the arbor. Now you just need grapes. : ) Nice of Poppy to give you a helping hand.
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice surprise getting those patterns.
Well, it looks like you were able to dig planting holes just fine. Good luck with the grapes!
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful picture! I have that Edwardian Apron pattern too. I can't wait to make it up; I'm sure it will cover me better than any other apron I've had.
ReplyDeleteYour grape arbor is a reality! With the contributions of your goats and chickens, I predict it will do very well. What a wealth of new apron patterns. How will you choose one to make first!?!
ReplyDeleteYou did a lot of work constructing the grape arbor. Congratulations! Work pays off. I love apron patterns, too. Looks like a lot of fun looking at the apron patterns.
ReplyDeleteHi Henny, that grape arbor will yield you some delicious grapes. When I grew grapes I tried blanching grape leaves to make dolmas but they were a bit too tough. Fun to try though.
ReplyDeleteHi! That grape arbor will be wonderful! You will have lots of fun making aprons from your new pattern. So nice of her to send them to you! Nancy
ReplyDeleteYou're making all kinds of wonderful things! That arbor will be the best -- nothing like rooted trees to make something very sturdy. Good job! And the patterns are delightful. The frilly one on the little girl is sweet. Can't wait to see what you do with them!
ReplyDeleteYour grape arbor is going to be fabulous!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the start of that grape arbor, I look forward to reading about it in the future and I look forward to seeing the new aprons you make from those patterns.
ReplyDeleteHi Henny,
ReplyDeleteI am excited for the grape arbor. I will be harvesting my grapes this coming week.. when it finally stops raining. Goodness we have gotten the rain.
Love, Carla
