The State Fair was fun, but I've got to tell you friends, and apologize again, "I did not ride the hobby horses". That little half person on the far right is Shelby!!
my intentions were good and sincere, but getting there and looking at the stirrups on those horses and thinking, "can I really get my foot in that stirrup, and pull myself up, holding onto that metal pole"? and "What if I fall", I kept thinking!! How embarrassing would that be!! but...
I'm not giving up yet. There's always next year, if the good Lord is willing.
Anyhow, Shelby and I enjoyed our day at the fair. We had the usual fried dough, corn on the cob dipped in butter, a muscadine slushy, NC State ice cream, and, well, that's about it. We love the walking, watching people, and just enjoying a day together.
Don't you love a parade? I do! Especially a military parade.
and about this next place...
The night before the fair, "The Tar Heel Traveler", a feature on our local news, did a story about this pie company from Minneapolis, called "Minneapple Pie". They serve a hot fried apple pie with a big dip of vanilla ice cream and apple syrup drizzled over the top. Hey, that half a person on the right is Poppy!!
Anyhow, we walked and walked searching for this pie place, when finally, Todd spotted it!! We ordered four...$8.00 each! It was delicious!!
Okay, then we visited the "Antique Farm Machinery" and would you look at this tractor...
Have you ever in your life seen a prettier tractor?? Hey Willie, should one of us try buying it?? Willie is our Italian blogging friend, who leaves the neatest comments!!

we were in line to sample a free "House Autry" hush puppy and there stood Miss Moore County. Why Poppy and I both grew up in Moore County.
Did you know that way back in the 1960's I was a contestant in the Miss Moore County beauty pageant? That's a fact; selected by the senior class to represent West End High School. Friends, I was, without a doubt, the most bashful contestant to ever set foot on a stage. I forgot to smile. A total flop, just like my piano recital was in the 1950's when I walked out on the stage wearing my beautiful red gown, sat down at the piano, and did not hit one right key. Pitifully, the teacher motioned me to leave the stage. No wonder I have issues!

So, Shelby and I were at the fair on Monday, then, believe it or not! Poppy and I went back to the fair on Wednesday. We met Andee and Todd there.

aww, that half a person there to my left is my sweet Andee. Actually, I was going to post a picture or two that included me, but honestly, my self-consciousness totally ruins every picture! Seriously! If someone could have caught me unaware there was a camera, a picture may have turned out okay, but smiling for a picture, well, I can make some of the worst facial expressions.

Good Morning! Looks like you had a swell time at the fair . . . You should have tried the horses on Wednesday and Poppy could have help you up and down :) I know my suggestion is a little too late, LOL, bit like you said maybe next year. We all make fools of ourselves from time to time the trick is to learn to laugh about in and not worry about what others think. We've all been there. Sounds like we need to go into the pie and ice cream business :)

HeHe! Yes! I~LOVE~A~PARADE...Dressing up, and all that..
Love it! Different outfits..but, l'm not to keen on brass
bands, don't know why, never have been, something about
the sound, or the noise as l call it..though l was involved
in Carnivals, as we call them, when my daughter was smaller,
that was great fun, each local town would have a fair and
carnival at different weekends, and we would travel with
a made up float, on some fairy tale theme, and join the
paraded..great fun..as long as it did'nt rain..! :).
And dressing up...HeHe! Many moons ago, when l started
out in the entertainment business..l did a summer season,
in a holiday camp, people used to travel from ALL over
the country, and spend a week..or two..at these holiday
camps, with full accommodation and entertainment..on the
Sunday, they had the Miss Pontins competition..young ladies
would enter..get into a line..and be interviewed one at a
time..I~I~I was always at the end of the queue...ALL dressed
up in full 'drag'..dress, high heels, wig, make~up..the lot.
The idea was at the end, while the judges, where making
their minds up, l did a little ad~lib with the camp comic...!
Great fun..but don't tell anyone...! 😉
AND...Finally...(l think)..Just two things....
1) Very disappointed you did'nt ride the Hobby Horse..!

Oh Willie, I thought about you as soon as I saw that pink tractor. Those holiday camps sound fun and don't worry, I won't tell anyone. Would have loved seeing you all dressed up though. Back in the 50's my dad dressed as a woman in a play the Lion's Club put on. I'll never forget how he looked. He made a nice looking woman. I'm sorry to have let everyone down by not riding the Hobby Horse. And, I know you are Sicilian and not Italian...Don't know why I called you Italian. It will not happen again. :)
DeleteAren't you the lucky one, getting to go to the fair twice! There's so much to see at a fair. Those little piggies look more like they're fighting than playing. Next year when you go, watch the carousel for a few minutes and analyze how the horses are positioned when it stops. Some of them have the stirrups down low. As active as you are, you'd be able to get your foot in one of those, down at the bottom of its cycle. And I know you're strong enough to pull yourself up to the saddle. And then, there are always the bench seats. If you ride on the bench, at least you can say that you rode the carousel. Remember the old days, when there used to be encyclopedia salesmen at the fairs? I'm glad you had good weather and got to spend some fun time with Poppy, Shelby and her family.
ReplyDeleteOh Peg, it was fun. Shelby and I have talked about going to the fair twice but never have. Those little pigs were so funny. Andee got the best video, but I can't get it to play. I know what you're talking about with the low stirrup. My luck, then the horse would stop with the stirrup in the high position. You're right though, my arms should be strong enough to pull me up. I just lost my nerve again, that's all. :) Something about encyclopedia salesmen at the fair sounds familiar, but I can't remember. That is funny! Thank you Peg.

DeleteWhat fun to have a day out with Sis (and the rest of the family)! A muscadine slushy sounds oh-so-delicious! I haven't had a taste of this favorite flavor since I pulled the last one I could reach off a vine on the trail I walk.

Hi Henny, How interesting to hear about the State Fair. We don't have an equivalent in Britain, really, but it looks a really nice way for people living in a region to enjoy a day out together. I understand your nervousness about the ride, mine would be anything in a fair that goes up high - I have a fear of heights and particularly rides that spin at heights. Great pics all, but the one that took my breath away was of those giant pumpkins - good heavens! :)

You are missing out on fun for no reason at all. What would happen if you did fall off one of them? I bet you girls would be laughing about it for a year.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the tour of The State Fair, Henny. I wish I would have been with you to give you a boost on to a hobby horse. I would have rode along. All that fair food sounds like it was worth the trip. And a good parade is always fun. We have something in common...I,too, was in a school beauty contest back in the '60's.My grade 12 class nominated me for Snow Queen (lol) Only in the north, eh! haha! And I was so flattered and shocked but nervous as I've ever been. Of course a beautiful blonde won but hey, it was fun. Hope you are still enjoying some warm weather. It is already very cold here and today we had a bit of snow. It didn't stay but it's just the beginning. Love to you, Poppy and all the critters. xo

ReplyDeleteWe just got back from spending two weeks in Maine with our granddaughters. I took them each one of the last two aprons I bought from you and they both loved them...Claire (the oldest one) especially. Hers was the black and white check one with the cherries on it. She used it several times while we were there. :)
Looks like lots of fun at the state fair. I thought for sure this would be the year you would ride the merry go round.

What fun the fair is! I enjoyed your pictures and don't worry about not riding the horses. I'd be worried about falling too as I get pretty klutzy sometimes! Maybe next year you and Shelby can ride in the seat on the carousel?

ReplyDeleteOh I just LOVE A GOOD FAIR! They are so fun! And so old fashioned, just like the 'good 'old days'. Back in the old days, I think the Fair was like the biggest social event of the entire YEAR for many small communities, wasn't it!!? I love to just walk around and look and people watch. I always ride the merry-go-round with daughter and lil granddaughter (I get a sit down seat, I would never attempt to get up on a horse now either!! LOL), we eat some goodies, enjoy some great music, watch granddaughter ride rides, buy a few fun little toys/souvineers for her, play a few games. I always enjoy it alot and we like to go into the animal barns too and see the baby animals and I like to go see who won prizes and ribbons for flowers, quilts, produce etc.

Those cute critters race around that track for an Oreo cookie prize. We have not gone to the fair for a few years now. Terry can no long walk that much. But I have some great fair memories.
