HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

Darkest night...

the old cedar chest...and a scary kitty cat...

Hey, it's pretty neat living in a house that can look a little spooky at times...comes in real handy at Halloween...

especially with a little adjusting of the colors.

Not a Halloween night passes that I don't think about how Poppy used to scare the life out of me. It would be pitch black out here in the country...

when I would pull in the driveway on Halloween night after working all day and driving that long drive home from Raleigh.

Sometimes I would sit in the car with the doors locked for a while, too scared to get out.

Poppy had the most horrible mask. Wish it was still here so I could show you, but the rubber face finally got all sticky and gooey and one of the eyeballs fell out. What a relief that was!

But, he would wear that mask and put on an old dark plaid robe and his big brogans, unlaced, and carrying an ax, would be hiding somewhere in the yard, ready to jump out when I got out of the car. Really glad we have outgrown all that! :)

So, this is about as scary a post as I can come up with. Speaking of scary, I have an appointment with the back doctor today. Yes, it's been aching again, and most of you warned me to "be careful" and "take it easy". Hopefully, I have just hurt my back...chopping down trees and moving cinder blocks...and it will get better. :)

Love,
Henny

  1. My Friend Jack......
    By....Rick W. Cotton

Jack comes every year to visit me,
And his grin just makes me smile.
    Nearly toothless, he doesn't care.
He happily laughs all the while.

Eyes glowing in mirth and merriment,
He makes this time of year happy.
Though he's not much in conversation,
And he has no repartee snappy.

Jack just stays for a few weeks
Every year when the leaves turn yellow.
He's as welcome as he could possibly be.
He's quite the fun old fellow.

Now the sun goes down and the moon comes up,
And the costumed monsters come calling.
Light a candle to get Jack going!
    Fast! The eventide's falling!

All Halloween night he sits with me,
    Grinning to greet the neighbors
'Til his candle's gone and he goes to sleep.
These are hours that I truly savor.

So long old Jack, tomorrow's November!
We'll see you again next year!
When you come to visit from the pumpkin patch,
    We will all be waiting right here! 👻 ☠️ 🎃 😱 🌛

  8. I remember other years when you mentioned how Poppy used to scare you so badly! I think I would have gotten rid of that scary mask pretty darn quickly.
How I hope nothing serious is wrong with your back and a week or so resting it will make it all better.

  10. Have a piece of Halloween candy and take it easy. Tell Poppy this is no time to try to scare you as it will make your back worst.

  11. Yikes..who wants to be scared like that...no way would I. I hate being scared and I will never scare anyone on purpose. Especially little kids...I really think scary kids is mean. Glad your hubby doesn't have that blasted mask. LOL. Bless you, xoxo, Susie

    1. I replied to your comment on my blog but then thought you might not see it so I replying here as well.

No, the little sticks and limbs help to hold the bigger pieces in place. There are lots of the smaller pieces in my fence too.
Thank you for your kind words, I enjoy your blog very much too. : )

  19. Why do men like to scare us??? Mine still thinks it's funny. Your yard looks wonderfully spooky, Henny! And that very fierce looking almost black cat -- ha ha, not a bit scary.

  20. From what I'm reading, husbands scare their wives... which begs the question, why do women keep marrying them? I would refuse to leave the car, probably run him over in my haste and then I'd ask a divorce. It's a demented sense of humor and I can't picture myself remaining in a relationship with someone like that! Like how can you trust him every other day??

I hope your back pain goes away. I threw my back last week and it is not fun. I can't believe you work so hard, physically, and aren't scared of hurting yourself. Fingers-crossed, it's not serious.

  25. I wouldn't do very well with someone waiting to scare me, especially being out in the country, but I know Poppy just got a kick out of seeing your reactions :)
Hope your back settles down Henny, there's nothing worse that chronic back pain.
    Hugs,
    ~Jo

  26. A lot of folks around here overdid it after the hurricane, and have bad backs/legs/arms, etc. I hope yours heals quickly on its own. The antic with Poppy sounds TOO TOO terrifying! Goodness, after the first time, if Adam did that he'd find a wife with a big fryin' pan, ready to whack him upside the head!!
