Looks like we're in business again. The swing is up and running, or up and swinging...
a strong nylon rope this time...
Yes, a brand new swing and it's a high swinger too!
except I'm a little nervous and feel like I can't hold on tight enough. A fall will do that to you, you know! and give you big ugly bruises too.
Wouldn't it be wonderful to have no fear again, like when you were about eight years old? Of course, there were no worries back then of breaking a hip.
I remember the swings at Aberdeen Lake back in the 1950's. Mama would pack a picnic basket and we would spend the day.
Those swings were perfect. Oh, you could swing so high it would take your breath away.
hey, that's us at the lake; Mama, my brother Jackie, and me. My sister Shelby was there too, some where?
it was quite a job getting the other half of that old rope down and even harder getting the new rope up and over that high limb. Poppy did good.
and while we're outside let me show you a pot of flowers
Perennials grow kinda weird here, I suppose because of all the shade...
This is Sedum, Autumn Joy, and is supposed to be a tall variety with straight stems and large pinkish red flowers.
It has been moved from place to place over the years and never would grow tall and straight. I put it in a pot and this is how it grew.
and the hummingbirds! we had to buy another feeder and hang it in Dumperoo's favorite window...
Appreciate your visiting. Hope to be back soon.
Love,
Henny
Love your swing, wish we had a tree that would be good for one.
ReplyDeleteI love the cat's name. Your sedums made me smile (sorry!) because they are a tad 'different.' But I think that makes them all the more charming!
ReplyDeleteAren't you a cutie with your pigtails!!! That swing looks sturdy now and maybe you just got to get right back on the horse that threw you as they say.
ReplyDeleteAww love the picture of grandma, you and daddy! So sweet. I use to love to go to Aberdeen lake. Aunt Shelby took us a lot. I wish you could still swim there, but now days there are way to many people. Love you flowers. I wish I had a tree good enough to put a swing in. Had some great times in the one at grandmas house.
ReplyDeleteLove you bunche
I'm guessing that sedum isn't actually Autumn Joy. When I worked at the nursery they had one that was a sprawler like yours. Lots of times plants end up with the wrong tags in them. We had swings similar to your's when I was a kid. My mum and dad carried some big timbers salvaged from an old building across the field behind us. Dad built the framework and we had two swings hanging from the top bar. As with yours, it all eventually rotted out. Hope you weren't too sore from your pointy landing, that must have hurt.!

ReplyDeleteGood to have your swing back in operation. Those high swingers are just the best-----a lot like flying. That "tall" sedum certainly is doing it's best to grow, shade or no shade. You have to give it "e" for effort.
ReplyDeleteI love the look the new handles give your kitchen cabinets and drawers. They really spiff up the place.
I've been AWOL for the past week or so--my computer (or maybe blogs in general) just won't post my comments. So sad. Hope this one posts.
Hey Vic. Thank you. I like those new dark handles in the kitchen too, and I am still loving the red canisters too! Glad your comment posted.
DeleteWow! I was trying so hard to catch up on blogs that I've missed the last two weeks and must have missed the part about you falling. I'm happy that your swing is fixed. If your sweet husband fixed it with you in mind, then you know that it is safe again. Don't let this fall steal away what youth you still have. Life is to be enjoyed. You know what they say about falling off a horse . . . get back on that swing and swing away, sweet friend.
ReplyDeleteStay Happy.
Connie :)
I remember the old metal swings would tilt if you swung too hard.
ReplyDeleteThe fifties! Great times! Great memories.
ReplyDeleteOh I hope you'll dare to swing again. Maybe Poppy should try it out first. If it can hold him it will surely hold you too!
ReplyDeleteI love the picture of you when you were a little girl. Maybe 10?
I'm also wondering if your Sedum is Autumn Joy. I went to look at the leaves on mine and they seem to be a bit different. That would account for the sprawling part I guess.
Have a great week dear Henny Penny.
Wow! The swing looks great, did'nt realize how long
ReplyDeletethe ropes were..that's quite long..l should imagine
it's produces a nice long swing, once it gets going!
I think the seat ought to have a coat of paint, of
some sort...HeHe! Pink..???
The Sedum looks great to..in a pot, where it belongs,
growing away nicely..lovely colour as well..looks good..! :).
And..Dumperoo..l bet that's his favourite spot of all...watching
the birds humming away all day, thinking of dinner..Bless!x
Well..just gone seven over here..time for a second lemon tea.....
Bit overcast, but dry at least, just off to the bathroom to
beautify myself..HeHe! Miracles! Miracles! :o).
How wonderful to have your swing back, Poppy did indeed do good.
ReplyDeleteSwings are a wonderful invention! Congrats on having your swing again.
ReplyDeleteYour sedum is really pretty in it's sprawl.
Have a great day ~ FlowerLady
I have that Sedum too and it vines too. I guess I didn't KNOW it was supposed to stand tall, lol. I remember swinging really high when I was a kid. It was before I started school. I remember that because of the house we lived in. I fell off the swing and it knocked the air out of me. It seemed like forever before I could breathe. I can't swing too high anymore. I have no fear, but it nauseates me. Perhaps it's a latent fear.

Yay for having a swing in working condition again! Poppy did good. I've always wanted one of the Sedum, Autumn Joy like you have and last fall when I visited a friend hers was beautiful. She brought me a piece of it this spring and hubby planted it for me. It is beautiful! Makes me happy!
ReplyDeleteThat swing will get lots of use, it looks perfect.
ReplyDeleteOur Autumn Joy has just started to turn color, a sure sign that summer is waning. Yours is a lovely plant, maybe it just didn't read the manual :)
Hugs,
~Jo
Oh, I just love your swing, my friend. I remember swinging on one just like it when I was a kid. Such sweet memories...
ReplyDeleteHugs to you!
Glad you to have a new swing. . . Love Terry
ReplyDeleteThank you Terry. Oh, I forgot about that recipe...was it for the soup? :) I'll check back.
DeleteHappy to hear you have a new and safe swing. I just showed Ken the picture and I'm going to get one just like you. : )
ReplyDeleteSo glad you have your swing again! Just in time for some fall (autumn ... not actually FALL, as in fall off the swing) fun, swinging with the cool breeze in a sweater :) I've never seen Autumn Joy Sedum look like that before! I used to have some big bushes of it. Must just be a weird patch of it.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful you can swing again. As a little girl there was nothing happier than flying high in the sky on a swing. I am not too sure about flying high now, though. =) Those flowers are pretty. Your little spot of earth does look like heaven.
ReplyDeleteWe had a rope swing here when our kids were young, but that was long ago and now that tree is gone too.
ReplyDeleteI don’t think that sedum you have is an autumn joy. It has the wrong kind of leaves as well as growth habit. It must have been missed labeled. I don’t think it’s your fault. 🙂
My Uncles name was Jackie (mom's brother) and my Aunts name was Shelby (younger sister) and my grandparents had a nice, wide seated swing that hung from a really tall cottonwood tree branch. That was the best swing. The farmhouse is still there, sadly the tree and the swing are long gone, as are my grandparents. My grandpa checked that swing out every year to make sure it was safe for all 13 of his grand kids. First by checking the ropes for wear, the wooden seat for splinters and then he took it for a test drive. Best thing in the world seeing your grandpa swinging like a little kid. Most of the time he was always working, being a farmer and all. It was great to see him have such simple fun. Thanks for the memories. Ranee (MN) USA
ReplyDeleteOh Ranee, this is the sweetest story, and how funny that you have an uncle Jackie and Aunt Shelby. You sure had a special grandpa. I miss those old days. Do kids even play outside anymore? My sister and brother and I used to build tree houses by nailing boards onto two forked tree limbs. We would stay up there all day, and lots of times would leave one of mama's good quilts up in the tree and it would get rained on. Thank you for leaving a comment.
Delete"How do you like to go up in a swing/Up in the air so blue?/Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing/Ever a child can do!..." Mom read this poem to me often when I was child. and my Uncle made a marvelous rope swing exactly like yours, only not attached to a tree, and I did indeed love to swing on it.
ReplyDeleteMy gran had a swing like that right here on this property. I hope to hang one once we are a little less busy with the house. That is a sweet photo of you and your mom and brother. They are such treasures now, aren't they.
ReplyDeleteAnd look at Dumperoo. There is a lot of bird-watching going on around here, too.
Glad you got your swing back. That picture is the best!
ReplyDeleteWe have Autumn Joy Sedum and it sure does look different!
Hooray you got the swing working again! Good for you. Love your flowers in the pot. Love the kitty watching the hummers out the window. Your blog always feels like "coming home" again. Thanks for the great post today Henny. Always so fun to come here!
ReplyDeleteThank you Diane! I'm always glad to hear from you.
Deletewhat a fantastic job on the swing. i love swings. i have asked rob to look into getting a swing for a sweet girl child - but maybe something a little safer, something that we can change into a swing just like this for when she is older. we will see. maybe one day.
ReplyDeleteyou have a beautiful garden and your blooms are just spectacular.
I would love to have a swing like that! We have a porch swing but its just not the same. Molly does love to sit on the swing with me as long as I swing really slow. It finally cooled off to 80 degrees here and it feels so good! Can't wait for fall this year, this summer has been the worst ever. Hope you enjoy your new swing!
ReplyDeleteHey Diane, A porch swing is wonderful too. Molly sounds so sweet! Can you believe this cool day we've had. I hate to see it get hot and humid again. I'm sure thankful for this little break though.
DeleteThe hummers have been insane here also, they practically dive bomb me when I walk out the kitchen door!
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI love the swing, I would ask to go for a swing if I was visiting you. :-)
Carla
Your sedum is very pretty and I can imagine how hard it was to get the old rope down and set up the new swing at such a height.
ReplyDeleteThat is a high swing, the best kind! I remember pumping and pumping, higher and higher, trying to get the swing to "jump" as you got so high the rope would get slack. Crazy kids! I love the old photo of your family picnic.
ReplyDeleteyeah for new swing rope! I used to love to swing:)
ReplyDeleteAh Henny a new swing...one of my favorite things to do. Just be careful and don't fly to high! Loved seeing your sedum...it looks like it wants to tumble out of the pot instead of standing straight. I like the tumbling effect. Have a super week. Hugs!
