Bantams Moved In

Dear Friends,

The new lot is finished and the bantams are moved in!!  It's SO NICE to be able to walk into their lot.  In fact, being in the lot, I noticed the little grey hen's leg and foot.  It looked just awful!!   All crusty, swollen, and two of her tiny toes were about to fall off, seriously!  It's somewhat visible in the picture.  Her left foot.

Everything I read sounded like "scaly leg mite".    I had no idea how serious this can be .  A burrowing mite causes raised encrusted scales on the legs and toes.  If left untreated their toes can actually fall off.

Southern States, our local farm supply store, recommended using "Vet Rx".   After applying the "Vet Rx" only twice, her condition has improved!

That old bantam lot was awful (guess who designed it)!!  I had to crawl in and still couldn't get my hands on the chickens or even see them very well.  The old lot is torn down and every board, nail, piece of wire, and the dog house put back in it's place!!!!

On a brighter note, I want to show you the lettuce growing in the greenhouse...I've never had any luck growing lettuce.

If you've managed to read this far, thank you.  I can be pretty boring...

Love,  Henny Penny

  1. Dear Henny,
I am so glad that your little bantam hen is doing better. We are sometimes so helpless when we have to figure out what is wrong with our animals. Their new house looks grand. I wish we had chickens, but sometimes we are gone for too long to leave them by themselves. One dog will be all we have to tend, sweet little Lucy.
    Happy Spring,
    Pam

    1. Dear Pam,
Thank you. I hope her foot heals too. She is so tiny. We can sure get attached to our animals, can't we. We lost our little Pooh, a black poodle, a few months ago. He was 15 yrs old. This morning I was cleaning out and threw away several of his medications. It just broke my heart all over again. What is your sweet little Lucy? I can imagine how special she is. Good to talk to you again Pam. Thank you for your comment.

  2. Dear Henny,
Your new chicken palace looks great! I had no idea that mites could do that to a chicken. Wow.
Good thing you stay on top of all these issues.
So sorry to hear about the loss of your little Pooh. Sending you lots of sympathy and healing thoughts.
I like to think that perhaps we may see our beloved pets when we get to Heaven. The Bible doesn't say that we will, but I know that if God wanted to gift us in that way, He surely could.
    Love,
    Jen

    1. Dear Jen,
Thank you. I almost didn't catch this little hen's problem in time. Your comment about Pooh, and all of our pets is so sweet. What a good thought. Thank you.
