My mom's favorite was the black walnut. Both of these are extra hard to crack. We kids spent a lot of time with a hammer and a bucket of nuts to crack. We always had lots of black walnuts since relatives had trees and saved them for us. We picked them up by the bushel in the fall as kids and cracked and picked them all winter and my mom made the best banana bread in the world with hickory nuts. Sweet memories.
