But first, I am so happy that the month of February is winding down. Out feeding chickens this morning, I noticed buds on the Flowering Quince.
Be still my heart! I can hardly wait to feel the warmth of spring again...to hear the frogs down at the pond...and see grass that needs mowing.
Awww, speaking of the pond, we'll sure miss our old Miss Ducky. Sadly, she passed away last month...
The teeny tiny pond won't be the same without her. This was her pond for at least 15 years, and she stood guard and protected it daily. It was funny watching her swim out to meet any wild duck that might stop by...explaining to them that she was in charge here. She was our sweetie pie.
Another bit of news from January that I forgot to mention...
Our sweetest boy Eli turned 12 years old. The books say that's pretty old for a Pyrenees. He is doing well except for those big back legs which have become very weak. We keep looking at those wheels or wheelchairs for dogs but those made sturdy enough for a Pyrenees are expensive. :(
Still dreaming of Springtime, this is the little playhouse of my dreams...
Hope I won't get into trouble using this picture from off the internet. It's just so beautiful!!
Okay, about cleaning up the mess and what a mess it was! Remember my brilliant idea of using every towel in the house to make walking paths over the packed snow and ice?
Well, it took days for these towels to thaw up enough that I could pull them apart. Seriously! Frozen towels cannot be pulled apart. I used a potato rake to pull each towel from the ice and ground frozen beneath it. Chopped a few holes in the towels too!
That wheelbarrow packed with frozen towels facing the sun...stayed here for two days without thawing. I finally had to carry buckets of hot water from the house and pour over them.
Even though the sun came out the days were cold and the ice stayed around. The fun part was setting up a little laundry area with an old bench and No. 2 tub. My hands were more than a little chapped and dry after all this. Oh my gosh...there were bird seeds and sunflower seeds and gravel all frozen into the towels! My goal now is to buy all new towels and save these for future ice storms. :)
back to spring being just around the corner...the Jonquils are coming up...
I raked pine straw from off the dam and covered the bare winter ground around them. At least, it looks a little warmer for them.
Guess I've kept you long enough friends, well, that is if you're still here. Sure do appreciate your visiting.
Love, Henny
I’m very sorry to read of her passing. 15 years. Wow. So sorry. My goodness on the frozen towels. That’s a little funny. No spring flowers here yet though it was really, really nice outside yesterday. Today, we’re back to winter chillllllsssss. Cheers, Ivy.
ReplyDeleteYou Easterners really have had the cold and storms this winter. We have winter flowers blooming.
ReplyDeleteThose towels saved you from slipping but make for a whole lot of work to put away.
My condolences for losing Miss Ducky. :-(
Will you find a new duck for the pond? Maybe even a pair? That would be lovely.
ReplyDeleteSorry about the ruined towels. At least you were able to thaw them out in the end.
I wish Poppy would build you a little playhouse like the one in the picture. Wouldn't you have fun in there!!!!
Sorry to hear about Old Miss Ducky. But perhaps a new duck will take claim to the pond eventually... and carry on for her. Eli may be old, but living the good life. Ellie probably keeps him young. Your little playhouse is adorable. And as for the towels, definitely buy new ones!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for Spring either. We had a few nice days and now are back to snow again.
ReplyDeleteSorry about Miss Ducky. She had a good long life! Happy Birthday to Eli too.
Those towels sound like quite the ordeal to take care of. It was still a great idea!
So sorry about Miss Ducky. 15 years is a pretty long time. She had a happy life.
ReplyDeleteI am pleased you are seeing signs of spring in your area dear Henny. We are getting slightly autumnal feels here & its wonderful. So sorry that Miss Ducky has gone to the Rainbow Bridge. xx
ReplyDeleteYour towel saga makes me wonder how the pioneers negotiated harsh winters with frozen water, Henny Penny. My hat is off to them for going through such truly hard and difficult times. I must admit, I don't think I'd have had their determination. It's so hard, too, to lose the icon of your pond who had become a beloved member of your family. As Jesus promised us many rooms, I hope she finds many ponds to love and protect.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Way to go Eli getting older is hard on dogs. Sorry about miss ducky, hope another special duck takes her place. Yak tracks will help with the traction problems.
ReplyDeleteI think you shouldn't leave your pond without a duck guardian!!
ReplyDeleteHow difficult it is with the towels and the snow!!
Take heart, spring is coming soon!!

Ah! Poor old Miss Ducky...Bless her, and 15yrs, that's
ReplyDeletea good age for a duck..you'll miss seeing her at the
lake...oooops! Sorry pond...As l've said before, over here
that would be a lake...HeHe! :).
And the weather over here is much the same, it's been
Rain..! Rain...! And more Rain....! :(
Though as l look out the Paddington Bear curtains, there
is a little sunshine...! :).
Oh! And...I must say, l do love the towels in the wheelbarrow,
leant against the tree..That really looks like a 'work of art'...
Like a famous painting or sculpture...HeHe! "I rest my case"..
And your No2 tub, looks quite full to...Goodness! What on earth
are you cooking your stews in now then..? Bless! The weather
has no boundaries does it....! :).
Best get on...Another lemon tea is called for...With honey and
lemon of course...and hopefully a quiet day...! :O).

So, only use old towels as icy walkway covers! Message received, lol I don't envy your having to deal with all of them.
ReplyDeletePoor sweet Eli. It's so hard seeing them grow old. Our cat Riley is 16 this spring and has a hard time getting around some days. I found a glucosamine cat treat that seems to help. He's certainly been livelier, more alert, and more mobile since I started him on them. Don't know if it would help Eli, but they make them for dogs too.
What a winter, hasn't it been. Glad you finally got the towels loose and cleaned up. Saving them for the future ice event might just be the insurance that it will not happen to you again, lol. Sorry about Ms. Ducky. Don't we just feel so sad when one of ours leaves us. And happy birthday Eli. Just keep on keeping on, as they say. We have snow today just as the 20 inches plus more melted Thursday. But this is to only be one or 2 inches. So glad to see and Poppy survived this brutal cold. Lynn and Precious, and purrs to Smokey and pets to Miss Ellie.
ReplyDeleteAwe...how sad that ducky is no longer here..the pond will certainly miss her. So sorry. Same here..I put out some old bath rugs to help cover some of my in ground ferns. It took forever for them to thaw out so that I could remove them from the ground without damaging the ferns. Lesson learned for me. Spring is already happening around here...we have blooms and lots of bud on the trees. Have a great Sunday
ReplyDeleteLove the picture of the playhouse. I would love one too! Happy late Birthday to Eli! He's such a beautiful boy. I'm sorry about Miss Ducky. She will be missed around the pond this summer. Ducks can sure have an attitude can't they? Lucky you in having signs of spring. We had such beautiful weather for a few weeks and we were all set to go camping. Then, last Thursday, winter struck with 9 1/2 inches of snow. The most we've seen all winter. It is 3F right now but supposed to be a big warm up by weeks end. Not enough to camp though and everything will be pure mud anyway.
ReplyDeleteTake care my friend and enjoy your early springtime.
Blessings and hugs,
Betsy
So glad you got your towels unfrozen finally. Whew....what a lot of work. Hope that doesn't happen too often. Oh wow...Eli is 12 now. He is such a sweet, beautiful dog. Hope you can help him with his leg problems. Take good care, Melba. God bless you. Love you.
