Step into my parlor...the new chair has arrived

Okay, the new chair is in the living room...here's what we need next...

the carpet shampooed, a new rug, new lamp, new side table, and new bar stools. :(  I have no idea what that dirty looking spot is behind the chair. Looks like someone dropped a cup of coffee.

What we really really need is new carpeting. Wouldn't that be pretty! Want, want, want, says Poppy. If only I could win the lottery! :)

Clean the carpet is on my to do list for Monday!

Friends, wonder why I can't make biscuits. Seriously.

Mama used to make biscuits from scratch every day. She had one of those wooden dough bowls.

She would sift a little pile of flour into the bowl and with her finger tips, dip out a measure of shortening and while working the shortening into the flour, still using her fingers, she added milk and worked the mixture into a soft dough.

Mama then pinched off a section at a time and gently rolled it between her hands to form a small biscuit. When all the biscuits were on her old black bread pan, she made a fist and with the backs of her fingers, pressed the biscuits down then baked them.

Mama, back in the 40's. Wonder if she had biscuits in the oven at the time.

Those very flat biscuits in the picture, I'm ashamed to admit, were made by me for supper last night. Oh the biscuits tasted good, Poppy even said so, but they were supposed to rise more. I've never been able to make good biscuits.

"a pitiful looking selfie of me and a sweet little chick."  :) Three of the little chicks like to be held. Once we moved them to the big chicken lot, the mama hen said, "I'm done with you bitties"!

It was cold out first thing this morning. My hands were as cold as they look too. I had taken off my gloves and dipped ice out of the goat's water. Actually, it was 29 degrees, which isn't bad, but after several mild days, 29 felt pretty cold.

Is the new chair too loud?

Talk to you soon!

Love,
Henny

  1. Good Afternoon, OH! I love the chair. Beautiful choice of fabric. Funny how one new things leads to another, huh? lol What a cute photo of the little chicken. It felt cold at 30 here this morning too, after such warm temps recently. That's a precious photo of your Mom. I have never been able to make biscuits either.
Wishing you a very nice afternoon. xoxoxo

  2. Hello Penny :0) so wonderful to see your gorgeous chair!!! I know that when you do something like that, you begin to see what looks kind of shabby...but I know that after you clean the carpet and maybe move things around a bit, you will see that what you have is actually quite nice ;D hugs to you from the mountains of PA :0) mari

  3. Your chair looks wonderful Cleaning the carpet will improve the look of the room. The truth is most of us don't live in designer showrooms if we have pets and are busy living our lives doing lots of things.
    And you're a busy lady!
I live in the mtns. in central Calif., snows on the ground, and my critters track in all sorts of stuff. Years ago I gave up and had the carpeting removed because it looked so nasty. Don't forget to sit in your chair once in a while. Keep warm. Sandy

    1. Thank you Saundra. You know, most of the messes in this house come from animals coming and going. But we really enjoy our animals. I would not be happy in a house where I was afraid to relax.

  4. Such a nice chair! I need a couch for the room we made from the garage (15 years ago!), but don't want to back it up to the post we hang our work coats on; too much dust and smell from the chicken houses. Everything new here goes toward farm machinery, etc.
My mama made biscuits in a similar manner; I've never learned the technique so Pillsbury makes them for me.

Your biscuits look yummy. I have trouble with pie crust, my Mum makes the best pie crust. Love the photo of your Mum.

  6. Ohhhhh your chair is beautiful!!!! Love the colors.

Oh mercy, we need a new rug in the Hearth Room, the room we use all the time. Or at least, have it shampooed. But there is so much moving of furniture, to have it shampooed.<--Excuse enough, for now. -grin-

Great olden picture of your Mama! As to the biscuits, each one of us, can't make everything perfectly. :-) I make a fantastic pie crust. My one claim-to-fame. ,-) But I hate to cook.

Yes, your hands do look cold!

And no, the chair is not too loud! Tsk-tsk-tsk... Don't go second guessing your fabric choice. No no no! It is beautiful. Warm and inviting looking. And won't show the dirt.

Ooops, Poppy wouldn't like that, would he??? Inferring that he sits in it, when not totally and precisely without any dust or stuff, on his clothes.

Mmmm, do any men, do that?????????? >,-)

  7. I know what you mean about making biscuits, Henny. My mom made a fantastic tea biscuit that I have tried many times to make and they just aren't the same. Love the photo of your mom. And the old car...fantastic. Aren't the b&w photos the best. Your hands would be frozen here, too. It actually stopped snowing for awhile today o we walked our grand-dog. And your chair looks lovely. Does Eli approve? lol

  10. The chair looks great! Is the green rug separate from the light coloured one? If so I would replace or remove that, and just clean the other rug. I too just thought that was a shadow behind the chair. We have an area rug in the living room, and that is about it. Too much mess carried in by all the animals. When I see places with carpeted stairs, I cringe because I know how much stuff I sweep of our stairs. But then not everyone has a farm and animals. Vacuuming stairs just seems tedious work!
Don't you have to add something to the biscuits to make them rise? Baking powder or soda or egg?

    1. Thank you Karen. I was up early this morning drinking coffee and thinking about removing the big flowered print rug. I've really loved that rug, but it just does not go with the new chair. Actually I would like to remove the carpet and the rug and have hardwood floors. Oh gosh, I don't know where to go from here. :) Oh the biscuits...I used self-rising flour.

  11. The chair looks great; you chose very nice fabric. I do know what you mean when you say one new thing makes other things look like they need freshening up.

About the biscuits.... there are some helpful videos on You tube. Try again and let us know. I baked today and although everything turned out fine my loaves look crazy. I don't take the time to make them nice and even ; I guess because I know how fast they'll disappear anyway. I feel obliged to make nice-looking food for company though and often that can cause me stress.

  13. That chair suits you perfectly. And how funny that you just had to point out the spot in back of it. I never would have noticed it. That's just the sort of thing we all do, isn't it? Someone drops by the house and all you can see is the spot on the couch or the corner where the dog had an accident, and before you know it, you're exclaiming about how you need to get the spot remover.

Hi henny! I think your chair looks just fine in your house. Enjoy the brightness of it! Ha....isn't it human nature to get something "new" and then think you have to do lots of other things too! If I was at your house...I would enjoy those biscuits!!! Don't compare them to your mama's delish biscuits...just enjoy the work of your own hands! Thanks for a great blog! Stay warm!

  19. The chair is lovely. I really like the colors and pattern that you chose. As Karen above suggested you might think about removing the green figured rug that the chair is sort of sitting on. So close together they are competing with each other for the viewers attention. Or the chair might be positioned somewhere else although if it's Poppy's chair it probably has to stay right there in perpetuity. Men, what can I say? Every 15 years or so is often enough to rearrange the furniture.

The biscuits look good. I think that CrackerBarrel has us bamboozled by those mile high biscuits they serve. My mother was a wonderful cook and her biscuits were so good but not real tall at all----they were short and had a really nice crispy bottom. Yummy! I have tried a bunch of biscuit recipes looking for those tall fluffy biscuits and mine never come even close to the pics shown with the recipe. Personally I think those in the pics are fake biscuits that they buy from a fake food store---special for cook books to make all potential biscuit makers feel really inferior.

If they are the kind you roll out and use a cookie cutter to shape, leaving them a little bit thicker to begin with might help some. But if yours taste good that is the main thing---a nice appearance is one thing, a good tasting biscuit is what really matters.

    1. Thank you Vic. You're right. The chair, and that rug with the orange and big flowers and swirls together just don't go. It is driving me crazy looking at the combination. Speaking of biscuits, have you tried the Red Lobster biscuit mix. You add 1/2 cup of grated sharp cheese, 1/2 cup water and bake. The box makes 10 biscuits and comes with a garlic/herb mix that you add to 1/2 cup of melted butter then spread on top of the hot baked biscuits. These things are delicious!

      Delete
    2. Henny, The Red Lobster biscuits are expensive. Do you know they make them with Bisquik, grated cheddar, butter, Lawry'r garlic salt, & some dried parsley.? You just use the recipe on the box, mix the in the cheddar, & bake. When you take out of the oven put the melted butter with the herbs over the biscuits. Sandy L

    3. Oh, no I haven't seen the red lobster biscuit mix. I love those biscuits. Of course I love anything with cheese and garlic mixed in! I'll have to check that out. Where on the shelf would you look for them, with the bisquik and jiffy cornbread mix?

I know what you mean about wanting to have more than one biscuit at a time. They are almost impossible to resist. I'm not even going to mention biscuits with sausage gravy slathered all over them. Nope, not even going to think about those!

My Granny made great bread and biscuits from scratch. I was too dumb to learn from you. To me, if they taste good, that is what matters.

  23. I really like the fabric on the chair. It goes real well with the pattern in the rug. As for the biscuits, I pretty much quit making them when I found frozen Pillsbury Grands at Sam's Club. They're nothing like the ones in the cans. They're like real homemade from scratch biscuits. I love crisp bottoms on biscuits and yours look like they'd have that all over. Yum! I care about taste, not looks.

    1. Thank you Peg. We do love those frozen Pillsbury biscuits too. They taste just like homemade, don't they? Trouble is, I want to eat two or three and each biscuit has about 170 calories and 9 grams of fat. The homemade biscuits probably do too, but it is not written down where I can see it. :) I do love an extra biscuit with butter and jelly, even after a big meal.

  24. Your chair is gorgeous! It looks so comfortable. I don't think the chair fabric is too loud and it has pretty colors that would be fun to coordinate with! I used to be able to make good biscuits and in fact entered them in our county fair when I was a teen and always got a blue ribbon. I've gotten lazy though now and haven't made them for a very long time. As long as your taste good, that's the important part. My late mother in law cooked like your mom - no recipe, just a scoop of this and a pinch of that. Have a blessed Sunday.

  30. Oh, your mom and my mom made biscuits the same way. Mom always made a little well in the dough and put the lard in...and she mixed with her hands. NEVER measured a thing. and she pinched off the pieces and rolled the between the hands to form the ball. Now she baked hers in a 9x13 cake pan. Most of the time she made just enough to fill the pan. and they were always uniform in size. The grandkids would eat them like they were cake...I can remember them begging for more and she made a whole pan of them and the two boys ate them every one.

I cannot make biscuits...not from scratch! Haven't tried in years. But I would sure love to have some of hers. Hers were a different texture, too.

I do make cornbread like she made it...and I don't measure either.

    BTW, your chair is beautiful!
