A little black duck

Poppy was off work last Wednesday. I talked him into going with me to buy a duck...or two. These ducks were on Craig's List. As it turns out the people selling the ducks live a mere ten miles north of us. They raise ducks, chickens, and geese to show. In fact, all the beautiful big geese and ducks that Shelby and I spend so much time looking at when we go to the State Fair belong to this couple.

Of course, they don't sell their show stock but there were lots of ducks to choose from. We bought only one, a young female. Had we brought two home there was a chance the two would stay together and not become friends with our lonely muscovy duck. This ducky had never seen a pond before...and did she ever stir up the water...

She bathed and splashed and dived and was fine until she saw me walk away. She then flew to catch up and followed me back to the house quacking and talking to me all the way. I am amazed that she is following me around so soon. The name Piper seems to fit her just fine, don't you think?.

Poppy came home from work with a grocery bag full of blueberries someone gave him. I froze most of the berries then went on line and found a simple blueberry pie recipe...

The taste was really good especially with two dips of vanille ice cream on top but there were too many berries for the amount of crust. Guess I should have made a cobbler.

Looks like tomorrow will be another canning day...that is if I get the green beans snapped. I've picked another 17 pounds of green beans from the garden. Been a long time since the garden did this good...

Better get going. The days go by so quickly. Seems like I just get all the curtains in the house opened and it's time to shut them again. Maybe we could hire someone to just stand by the windows and open and close curtains. :)

Thank you for visiting.

Love,
Henny Penny

    1. I'm so afraid something will kill her. Until she gets a little older she is sleeping in a cage at night.

  3. I love that Piper bonded to you so quickly. Now will she bond with the other duck?
I love your blog too. It takes me back to my country roots.

    1. Last year the beans were tough and stringy so I am happy these are doing good. I would love to know how you cook your beans...probably much healthier than this southern way of seasoning with fat back meat grease.

    2. Plain boiled or steamed..I add them to salads ,risottos, etc and have them just as a side veg.

  5. No dust on Piper's tail, what with all that happy splashing - or yours either with all your canning!

  6. Definitely a Piper! I love how she took to the water and attached herself to you on the walk back to the house.
Oooooh, that pie looks scrumptious. And your beans are a thing of beauty as well. The wild baby rabbits got into my "rabbit proof fence" and ate my beans and bean plants right down to the ground. I can't figure out how they are getting in, but it's too late for the beans this year. Boohoo.

    1. I'm sorry to hear about your beans. Rabbit proof fence! :) Last year I caught a tiny bunny in our garden. He was coming under the fence. This one didn't eat much. He was too busy trying to find a way back out. The wild bunnies are so cute.

  7. Your garden produce looks wonderful. I think that green beans (and dried) really need some seasoning cooked with them. I hate those crunchy green beans that are mostly served in restaurants----you might just as well be a raw foods adherent to eat them.

It sounds as if your under housemaids are not fulfilling their duties with the curtains. Maybe you could train the cats and Eli to grab hold at the bottom corners with their teeth and pull them open and closed that way. The training period might be difficult for you, but I bet Eli would catch on real quickly, the cats most likely would take longer since felines are somewhat averse to instruction. But it might save you some on housemaid wages in the long run.

  8. Well, me too. I feel guilty that I still use fat back to season with while everyone else has gone to healthy cooking. Hey, I could train Eli to open and close curtains. It would help if Poppy would learn how. Just kidding. He does help with the curtains occasionally. :)

It looks like he has already made himself quite at home.
Your pie looks delicious, I can only imagine the taste...topped with a scoop of ice-cream *drool*

  10. There was so much to catch up with, I was only going to peek for a minute! The joyful duck dance is amazing, and I can just imagine how happy Piper was to find her new home had such a perfect"water feature"! Can I use your photo of the colorful vegetables for a little still life? It simply glows, and all your produce looks delicious. What fine farmers you are. Love Eli in the bed, this happened to me with some of our dogs, and once they start, it is sometimes hard to get them down! It was always my side, until our Lucy, and since she is Dan's best girl, he is ok with her at his feet.

    1. Pam, you are most welcome to use the colorful vegetables picture. I'm flattered. The animals always show up on my side of the bed! I was up at 5am this morning because Eli was crowded up between the bed and the wall...on my side. I got up and made coffee and just stayed up with him. Dan seems to get his eight hours every night! :)
